CUPPING THERAPY

Cupping is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy that involves using glass or plastic cups to create suction on the body. Unlike Tui Na, which employs a “pushing” technique to remove stagnation, cupping utilizes suction and a “pulling” sensation to achieve a similar result. This method decompresses muscles, connective tissue, and fascia, creating a vacuum that allows fresh, nutritive qi and blood to flow into the area, promoting healing.

Cupping is primarily used to alleviate pain and tension, increase circulation, extract toxins from the body, and normalize physical and physiological functions. Depending on the level of blood stagnation in the patient’s muscles, it is common for cupping to leave “cupping marks” that resemble bruises but are actually petechiae. These marks can last anywhere from several days to several weeks and serve as an additional diagnostic tool for practitioners to better understand the patterns presented by the patient.

TUI NA

“Tui Na”, which literally translates to “push grasp”, is the oldest form of bodywork that we have on record. Tui Na uses specific hand techniques, some of which have been adopted by other bodywork styles, while others remain unique and stand alone within the Tui Na system. Tui Na is typically used alongside certain acupuncture points and meridians to move stagnation of qi and blood, alleviate pain and tension, regulate qi flow, increase circulation, restore physiological functions, and balance a person’s overall energy. Strategically integrated within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Tui Na is often used alongside acupuncture and herbal therapies to achieve optimal results.

MOXIBUSTION

This therapy is typically employed to address disharmonies caused by cold pathogens, which are common in environments like Flagstaff, or by underlying qi and Yang deficiencies. Conditions where moxibustion is most frequently used include joint pain, indigestion, organ prolapse, gastrointestinal issues, menstrual cramps, and infertility. Additionally, moxibustion has demonstrated significant success in turning breech pregnancies, helping to position the baby for a healthy delivery.

Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) heat therapy that involves burning high-quality mugwort leaves (Artemisia vulgaris) and holding them just above the skin at specific acupuncture points and meridians. The unique properties of mugwort allow the soothing heat to penetrate deeply into the channels, helping to warm Yang, alleviate qi and blood stagnation, strengthen circulation, relieve pain and inflammation, and dispel cold and dampness. Overall, moxibustion promotes health and well-being by preventing and treating various diseases.
